6 Summer Weekend Ideas in D.C.
48 hours and our favorite options to make them memorable.
By Chloe Thompson
Perfect Stay. Summer is the ideal time for flicks in the city, and the swank Lounge at the Renaissance, Washington D.C. Dupont Circle Hotel (marriott.com) is getting into the game. The hotel screens independent films for the public in conjunction with the area’s many film festivals—a different movie, plus theater bites (think Kobe beef and ahi tuna sliders) and sips, shows every Tuesday evening, July 12 through Aug. 23.
Perfect Buy. Co-founder Annie Lee of vintage haven Annie Creamcheese launches her own venture in Old Town. Pretty People (prettypeoplevintage.com) caters to the Chanel and Dior crowd at oh-so-reasonable prices, with Lee’s renowned fashion eye keeping tabs on her exclusive picks. Look for sweet contemporary and vintage jewelry buys, too. Flyer readers: Bring this page in and receive 20 percent off of one item (excluding designer items).
Perfect Bites. As Café Atlantico shutters its doors (temporarily), José Andrés opens a new all-American spot on July 4. The 130-seat America Eats Tavern (americaeats tavern.com) stays open through January in collaboration with National Archives’ new exhibit “What’s Cooking, Uncle Sam?”
Perfect Diversion. Georgetown welcomes Heiner Contemporary (heinercontemporary.com) this summer. Expect mixed media from emerging and mid-career artists nationwide. Stop by the gallery’s market to take home prints and originals. Would-be artists can stop in for art consulting services, too.
Perfect Escape. Stroll up Wisconsin Avenue, away from the always-packed M Street, and settle down with a good read at Book Hill Park (Reservoir Road and Wisconsin Avenue, NW) in Georgetown. After years of community renovation, the park is an idyllic secret in the city.
Perfect Treat. Ditch that cupcake, and take a slice of O’B. Sweet (obsweet.com) pie home instead. The Blakely sisters’ first D.C. retail spot is slated to open in late August. Each hand-rolled pie brims with locally sourced ingredients—choose from an individual-sized “cuppie” or a 7- to 9-inch pie in flavors such as apple caramel crunch and jumble berry.
