What's New in Dallas
The Big D offers plenty to get excited about this winter, including new restaurants, hotel options, exhibits and an emerging neighborhood we love.
By Michael McCarthy
Despite our football affiliations, we kind of like Dallas. There, we said it. The town offers all new reasons to visit this winter. Some of our favorites...
Sweet Sleeps
Two new major hotel renovations celebrate the allure of classics: Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek and Stoneleigh Hotel and Spa. Rosewood is regal Dallas, with sleek furnishings and a Michelin-star chef; Stoneleigh is Art Deco chic, with a signature restaurant (Bolla) and a spa that are anything but conventional.
Night Spots
If a place sports a wraparound outdoor deck, can it still be called a lounge? If you’re in Dallas, it hardly matters. Such is the premise behind J. Black’s Feel Good Lounge (2409 N. Henderson Ave.), featuring inventive cocktails and its “title tacos”—1971, 1977, 1992, 1993 and 1995, the years the Cowboys won the Super Bowl. Locals also are thrilled with the return of a good bar and even better pizza: the newly reopened Sfuzzi (2533 McKinney Ave.), which offers pies till 3 a.m.
Food Finds
The local buzz is for Samar (2100 Ross Ave.), featuring international small plates influenced by India (Bombay tiger prawns), the Eastern Mediterranean (chicken with fenugreek mashed potatoes) and Spain (almond gazpacho with liquid grapes). Uptown’s latest comfort zone is The Common Table (2917 Fairmount St.), a little house where you can throw back signature mojitos while noshing on pulled-pork spring rolls before the Shakespeare Stout short ribs arrive.
Winter Fun
“Big New Field: Artists in the Cowboys Stadium Art Program” sounds like a Jerry Jones PR scheme—but it’s far from it. The exhibit, opening Dec. 5 at the Dallas Museum of Art (1707 N. Harwood), celebrates the contemporary public art program at the new stadium by showcasing artists in a range of media, including painting and sculpture.
Great Walk
For a little bit of Austin in the Big D, venture into Deep Ellum, the roots music
neighborhood of the moment with lots of late nights in store. Slide over to LaGrange (2704 Elm St.), Tuckers’ Blues (2617 Commerce St.) and the All Good Café (2934 Main St.).
Getting There
Daily nonstop flights to Dallas on American and United Airlines from Reagan National and on American and US Airways from Dulles International.
