What's New in Los Angeles

A bohemian setting and, yes, a piano bar greet guests at Cafe Was.

What's New in Los Angeles

From food to hotels, here's the best of what's hot right now in the City of Angels.

By Chloe Thompson

The City of Angels is always changing, and our radar finds some of the finest spots to keep things interesting in the months ahead.

Hotels
As part of emerging entertainment district L.A. LIVE, the JW Marriott Hotel Los Angeles (900 W. Olympic Blvd.; lalivemarriott.com; rates begin at $179 per night) opened last month to welcome guests into its 878 rooms and suites. The hot spot is just steps away from the Grammy Museum and the STAPLES Center, but if you’re looking to stay put, check out Ion, the hotel’s rooftop pool and bar. W Hollywood (6250 Hollywood Blvd.; 323/798-1300; whotels.com/hollywood) opened in January, offering contemporary design and W’s promise to accommodate even the wackiest guest requests—“as long as it’s legal!”

Night Spots
It’s not your typical dinner party for five at MyHouse (7080 Hollywood Blvd.; 323/960-3300; myhousehollywood.com), a club within a mansion for Hollywood’s most elite. Featuring martinis, silk beds to lounge on, even freshly baked cookies from the kitchen bar, it’s not one to miss when living large. For light jazz and fabulous vino, head to Ivan Kane’s Café Was (1521 N. Vine St.; 323/466-5400; cafewas.com) for nightcaps and piano tunes in a bohemian setting.

A Neighborhood We Love
Silver Lake is close to Sunset Boulevard and filled with architectural delights and a diverse community. The hipster haven is home to Studio A Dance (2306 Hyperion Ave.; 323/661-8311; studioadance.com), with lessons ranging from tango to salsa to ballet—all under one roof. Take time out from a busy day and stop by Casbah Café (3900 W. Sunset Blvd.; 323/664-7000; casbahcafe.com) to nosh on baked goods and sip exotic limonata tea.

New Restaurants
Named “Restaurant of the Year” by Esquire and another home run for D.C. culinary kingpin José Andres, The Bazaar in SLS Hotel (465 S. La Cienega Blvd.; 310/246-5555; thebazaar.com) has been wowing crowds. The contemporary setting dishes up Spanish tapas and exotic cocktails. Foodies will love the hidden space where they can enjoy a tasting menu. For a bit of Parisian flair, don’t miss Bouchon (235 N. Canon Dr.; 310/271-9910; bouchonbistro.com) and try its quiche du jour.
